squeakytoad

So thanks for all the Birthday gifts...

Posted by squeakytoad May. 12, 2008 @ 1:26 AM EDT

...that I'm sure you're just late in sending, right, guys?

So I had a fantastic birthday. I had barbecue spare ribs (mmmmmmmmmm) at Sizzlers, then went and saw Iron Man (which was pretty much absolutely awesome), then grab some pizza at the Hut, then went home for some ice cream cake.

Good times. I got some books. And some junk food. And some tshirts.

Still waiting for that XBox360 you all pitched in and got me to arrive. ;)
In my dreams... Maybe if I made more animations about Sonic and Bleach... then you'd all be sending hundreds to my Pay Pal account...

.

Anyway, I had a movie I wanted to release on my birthday (first one entirely voiced by my newly formed "audio team"), but I didn't complete it in time. Probably going to aim for a Wednesday or Thursday release now.

.

What's with the scores on movies these days? It's really cheapening the stuff that deserves those scores, when EVERYTHING gets 4.18 or above.

"Brawl Taunts" is basically just some scribbled popular video game characters talking about "boobs" and "bawls" (yeah, hilarious... definitely...)
and "Irod Bad!" is just terrible...

Then there are movies like "crossroads in the sky" and "Karma" that are pretty well done, but a year ago would've only been ranked 3.90 - 4.05, and are now in what (previously) was the top fifty.
Of course, within only a few months time, the top fifty average score has risen from 4.24 to 4.32.
Weird.

Ah well, some great movies recently, so I shouldn't be complaining. Some of the newcomers on the flash scene these days are incredibly talented, and it's awesome to see some of the content being produced here.

I would like it if YouTube submissions would stop being so encouraged here. There are hundreds of video sharing sites, but as Gerkinman and I were discussing yesterday, the number of flash sites is rapidly declining. And the ones that stick around are usually all game sites.
Meh...

And happy mothers day to all you moms who come to Newgrounds, as there are so many of you around here.

Oh, and "Dark Knight" is going to be an absolutely awesome movie, which I am greatly anticipating.

So i was thinking, maybe we should join the cool kids and do some horrible anime voice acting and some poorly drawn scribbles so we can become popular.

You know, I almost spat my cum on the keyboard when I saw that AlmightyHans's 'Big NG Package' got a score of 4.12. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK?

May. 12, 2008 | 2:41 AM squeakytoad responds:

Yeah pretty much. Hans is funny and whatnot, and I would've found it a great video for him to embed on his userpage (one of the reasons this feature was created), but yeah, getting stuck on the front page, with a score of 4.12 (higher than many people's months of animating effort), and mainly because it was just promoting NG products (ANYTHING submitted to Newgrounds praising Newgrounds will immediately become excessively popular- see "My New Grounds"), was pretty lame.
And Afro Ninja's video "How to be a Guitar Hero" which he submitted the other month getting a 4.0 and front page spot as well as over 100,000 views was even lamer.
As were the many other videos submitted these last few months to NG.
And the excuse is constantly "Everything by Everyone." Ah yes, so let's start uploading old socks to Newgrounds. BECAUSE THE SLOGAN SAYS SO.

At least Hans can animate and has showed that he can make some awesome animations; but when some of these guys make video just to compensate for their lack of artistic ability, it's just downright retarded.

Happy Belated, brother. Yeeeah, I saw Iron Man yesterday - it was pure awesomeness. Maybe my favorite Marvel movie out. I looooved it. So badass.

I totally agree with you on vid submissions. It makes me really sad when someone makes a video of them doing something random and it has no real production - no camera angles, no sets other than their bedroom, and no real editing - and then they get daily feature and a 4+ score...I could do that!! I'm an actual video/film producer/editor and I work a freakish amount at that...but if I'm going to put stuff online - it's not coming to newgrounds. It's a flash site!

Anywho, can't wait for your newest submission to come out - I'm so curious as to what it's about exactly...haha - though I'm in it. :D

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you
go on
Far across the distance
And spaces Between us
You have come to show you
go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go 'til
we're gone
Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always
go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

You're here, there's nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

May. 12, 2008 | 5:33 AM RubberNinja says:

I think people have to understand that Newgrounds is more or less visited by people because of video game/anime satire. It's the target audience.

On TV, your ratings will be high if you appeal to a certain demographic and target audience.

It's the same here.

Your scores will be high if you appeal to the target audience.

For instance, lets say the target audience comes here due to video game satire. Then years later they develop an interest in animation. Shortly after they start making flash of their own. Of course because they were pulled in by this parody content, no doubt they'll want to make some of their own. It's called inspiration.

It's a cycle that can't be broken. It's just the kind of people the community is built up of. Newgrounds has been doing satire since its conception.

Not to say that the deserving content is overlooked. Content that very much deserves it isn't being kicked aside in the score department.

This kind of content is just developed by your everyday normal folk who want to make these kind of cartoons because they appeal to THEM. Which in the process it ironically appeals to the Newgrounds audience unintentionally.

I dislike seeing that my ABC work gets high scores here, but honestly there's nothing you can do about that. If it appeals, it succeeds.

Such is Newgrounds.

May. 12, 2008 | 6:08 AM squeakytoad responds:

There's a line though.

On one hand you have video game related content such as your "Gamer Tonight" series, such as Hans' "It's a Halo Thing", such as Pikanjo's "Perfect Kirby", such as "Zelda: Heart for a Hero", such as "The People's Mario", and other such cartoons.
These are all developed with attention to art, humor, animation, characters, plot, etc.

And on the other hand you have pieces of scribbled crap or stolen sprites thrown (tweened) together with poor voice overs and no central plot, simply intended to grab whatever cheap laughs it can and run, without any regard to quality.

I'm perfectly fine with the former and its gaining of success; the latter however, while still deserving a place on this site, certainly doesn't deserve the success they gain. Not even close.

.

I think people are mistaking my stance on the issue. I'm not just one of those "BLARG I HATE PARODIES THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ON NEWGROUNDS" people.
I've made parodies, and in the future I plan to make parodies.

Parodies are fun. They're like our imaginations come to life, in scenarios as they would never happen outside of parody. They also incorporate situations and characters we're familiar with, which instantly provides a sense of enjoyment.

However, many people take advantage of that, and make crap, and become quite successful.
They also give parody a bad name.
This is not cool.

.

And you didn't say "Happy Birthday".

:'(

May. 12, 2008 | 5:44 AM The-EXP says:

Form your flash page it looks like you yourself started off with StarWars parodies, its a growing process, now that you've settled and are creating original pieces it can sometimes get hard to remember back. I find myself doing it all the time, getting frustrated with high scoring sprite games based on Mario, but then I have to remind myself that my first NG game was a DragonBall Z game (cringe). It only becomes a problem when long standing Flash artists still rely on the crutches of parody of popular culture, which I see is part of your point. Oh well I guess its just a double edged sword...

May. 12, 2008 | 6:10 AM squeakytoad responds:

My first Star Wars parody has a score of 3.68. Mainly because it was submitted in 2005. Were it submitted now, its score would be much higher. If I incorporated video game characters, it would be even higher.
Also, those were less of "parodies" as much as they were "mockeries". Rather than riding on the familiarity of the fans to propel it to success, I unashamedly laughed at the stupid aspects of the movie, which actually garnered quite a bit of hate from fanboys.

REGARDLESS, I'm not against parodies. Allow me to give the same reply I did to Ross:

"There's a line though.

May. 12, 2008 | 8:20 PM squeakytoad responds:

Nah, the numbers are fine. If it was changed to an out of ten system, then the sprites and video game scribbles would just get a 8.5-9/10 anyway.
The point is that they're vastly outranking some quality work, which cheapens it.

I'm curious if people have just started voting five more insanely, or if someone behind the scenes tipped the balance somehow...

well, i cant tell.i agree as well, that ng is on a state of ''problemz'' because of the popular stuff getting front, and original stuff not. while i support video games parody movies (heck, i wanted to make one)... i think it should aim on humour, like OUR MARIO, or TSAH 2, or 1, or orange box... or er halomen.. and kirby. yet, sprites are a low attempt on efforts, talkin about flash!

(now, IF.. sprites movie contains original sprites, and looks like a work with kick ass, humour.. and great style.. with art! well, then i will like it. but i havent seen many of this type until last year)

May. 12, 2008 | 8:24 PM squeakytoad responds:

Yeah, I thought it was vastly overrated, but that could just be a matter of perspective, so I didn't carry that on beyond one comments on the day's top ten.

It was decently animated, the art was nice, and I suppose the humor could've just not appealed to me.

Yes, the presence of Tankmen boosted the score, but Pikanjos showed they can get high scores without the needed popular character boost.

So yeah, even though I didn't like it, the Pikanjo brothers are nice guys and this movie could be considered good from different tastes. (Unlike some of these flashes which are crap no matter what way you look at them.)

I try to stay objective.

I can't help but being hard. I suppose this is my outlet for criticism, as everywhere else I have to keep up a smile and be nice and gentle when giving my opinions.
I'm not like an ass or anything to these guys in real life. I've befriended some great people here by giving really firm and honest reviews and opinions of their stuff.
You'd be surprised how many people I now chat with regularly (and have even collaborated with a good deal) because I gave a critical review.

I'm working on it though. I try to keep my words way less personal than they were before (it never was personal, but I get the feeling one or two people have gotten the idea that I was going for their throats, so I try to avoid mentioning the artists as much now and whatnot).

May. 12, 2008 | 1:11 PM RSQViper says:

Lot of overrated-ness going on the last year.

Yeah, pretty much since last Clock Day everything has gotten a higher score than normal and almost nothing gets blammed that should. It also causes higher scores for better movies. Kinda sucks, but I guess that's just the NG of today.

It's crazy how many 4.00+ movies there are a day now when it was MAYBE one a day if that 1 1/2 years ago. I don't even think it's that there's that much better stuff, either. It's just the way people are voting.

May. 12, 2008 | 8:31 PM squeakytoad responds:

Yeah, really. Two years ago, there were only like five movies over 4.0 per week. And a top fifty movie only happened once or twice a month.
Times change.

I don't really mind stuff not being blammed. It doesn't affect anyone else if a crappy animation makes it through to the portal. And it's nice for the animator; encourages them to continue animating (and hopefully getting better), rather than just walking away from Newgrounds dejectedly upon being blammed, thinking they'll never make it.
But when something gets massively high ratings, it cheapens all the other animations of that rating (makes the "honor" less significant) and will often take awards and front page spots from more deserving animations.

On the topic of the overatted-ness, yeah, pretty gay, but I don't worry about it too much. If Tom and the gang don't mind, I don't see a lot of reason for me too. I just gave those movies low reviewing scores and posted a bit on the Today's Top 5 posts. I would only be pissed if I missed out an award, which even then it wouldn't matter much, besides a loss of some exposure.

May. 12, 2008 | 8:37 PM squeakytoad responds:

By that age I hope to actually be responsible and intelligent.

May. 12, 2008 | 3:22 PM MRat says:

I hear you, Squeak ol' pal. Now while I think RubberNinja had a pretty valid point, but he kept talking about satire, and calling parodies satire, and they're not the same thing, so that really got on my nerves.

A parody is a poor imitation intended to grab laughs based on the mockery. But the key there is "poor imitation." That's the definition. By taking just any old video game character and making him do silly things irrelevant to the game itself. you're creating humour with a video game character, but you ARE NOT parodying. Too many people confuse this.

Satire is when you're goal is to point out flaws by blowing them out of proportion. Humour is not the primary objective to satire, it is simply a result of the method. The intent is to bring attention, serious contemplative attention, to real faults that should be addressed.

I have a huge problem when people use similar terms that are not synonyms as synonyms. Such and the mountains of idiots on NewGrounds who vomit forth the new hip buzz-word of today, random, when they clearly have no idea what it really means. But that's a text wall of bitching for another occasion.

I personally don't find parody funny. Parody is stuff like Superhero Movie, or Meet the Spartans, where the jokes are based right on the films they're spoofing. Satire on the other hand is something I've very fond of. The line is very fine, however. Catch 22 is a fantastic example of a satire. So is most of the work of Oscar Wilde. Things such as Spy Hard, or Space Balls blur the line of parody and satire whoever. The general film is satire, but there are moments that are directly parody certain films.

Enough of that, Happy Birthday!

May. 12, 2008 | 8:42 PM squeakytoad responds:

I believe parody has a responsibility to be quality and funny.
Some Google Definitions that came up were:

"a composition that imitates somebody's style in a humorous way"

"humorous or satirical mimicry"

"Imitates or mocks another work or type of literature. Like a caricature in art, parody in literature mimics a subject or a style. Its purpose may be to ridicule, to broaden understanding of, or to add insight to the original work."

"In contemporary usage, a parody is a work that imitates another work in order to ridicule, ironically comment on, or poke some affectionate fun at the work itself, the subject of the work, the author or fictional voice of the parody, or another subject. ..."

.

I don't see how a parody has to be poor by definition. In fact, these seem to imply it has to, in order to be rightfully called "parody", be humorous.

As for the top 50/scoring thing, fanboys do tend to vote unfairly on video game submissions. If 'Brawl Taunts' had brackenwood quality animation you'd still get a few idiots going "WAHHH SONIK ISANT A CHEEP CHARECTER" and voting 0. Which erm, kinda balances things out actually because anything about smash bros or sonic or naruto is the holy grail of flash animation to these people apparently, hence the massive scores.

hahaha, I think it'll be fun when NG scores rise so high that anything that would get a 4.25 (which includes an awful lot right now) would instead get a perfect score of 5.00.

Eventually, once a number of animations got these scores, and getting 5.00 became an ordinary happening, an extra voting scheme would have to be implemented on submissions with 4.50 or higher so that the vote bar on that high level of quality went to like, 7. Or something.

Of course, some people would always vote lower, so a 'perfect' 5.00 would be impossible, but I do think that pretty soon, definitely within the year, average front page scores will be up in the 4.60s/80s.

Besides all that nonsense, happy birthday.

May. 12, 2008 | 9:49 PM squeakytoad responds:

It's kind of a bummer really, cause all those 4.20 - 4.30s I got back when it was significant don't mean anything anymore. :(

It's going to become like YouTube eventually, where scores don't matter, popularity determines what should get more popularity, and quality stuff is most often overlooked.

Squeak, you misinterpret poor. Of course it has to be humourous. By poor, I mean in terms of technical quality.

Webster's defines parody with exactly what I said. A poor imitation. That doesn't mean the content cannot be funny, but it should look and feel like a lower quality version of the original work.

I never said parody can't be funny, I just said I personally don't find it funny. Also, I'd never trust a "Google Definition" that game up. Much of the content on the internet like that exists because of contemporary bastardizations of terms, like people calling homosexuals faggots. I prefer to stick with texts that give the true original meanings of terms.

Anyway, that was a pedantic rant I left anyway, and didn't really relate in any tangible way to what was being said.

On the topic of overrated Flash movies, they've been around for ages. People see things they can instantly recognize, and thus don't have to think about, and click 5. Another thing is people who incessantly polish their work with an abundance of details and shading. Sure those things are nice, but people just see them and say, AWESOME, because they don't know enough to realize that a polished turd is still just a turd.

Your flashes are quite good,so you have more knowledge then some "Scribbled Stuff Too"
Please keep up the good Work on flashes, and on reviews.

Sorry you didn't like Brawl Taunts, but please keep in mind that we didn't expect in the least for it to get on the front page, or even get anywhere near the score it did. It was just some voice stuff I threw together and wanted some animation to go along with it in order to add to the audio. Neither of us thought it would get anywhere near as big as it did, and certainly weren't trying to take anything away from "quality submissions".

I know this is your blog and you can say whatever you want, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

I suppose the reason I feel the way I do is because it seems like the movie is trying SO hard to be popular and get high scores.
I first find it on the front page with an icon showing "girl with big boobs" (the primary motivator for half of Newgrounds users).
But I click on it anyway, because some talented voice actors and a really hilarious animator made it.
And as many popular Smash Bros characters are thrown at me within a ten second period as possible.
And every .04 seconds I'm here "bawls" or "boobs" or "ass".
Every cheap joke possible is gone for.

To me it seemed as if the entire cartoon were created to play off the popularity of SSBB. As I asked in my review, "Was any thought put behind this?"

Yeah, I don't really know what to say. I certainly don't feel this is something I've said that I should apologize for or anything. I just gave my honest opinion, one a large enough number of people agreed with (enough to counterbalance all the "Unhelpful" marks I was initially getting from fanboys).

No hard feelings though or anything. Everyone takes things so personally and develops grudges around here based on what someone said about a movie, but I'd prefer if that weren't the case.

Haha, I knew you had it in for me ever since that guitar hero vid. I know we already had a pm exchange on the matter but gimme a break. The score is 3.93, I wouldn't call that drastically overrated. And yeah I got front page and it had a lot of views, but guess what, people like Guitar Hero. I didn't cherry pick the subject for popularity's sake, I picked it cause I play the game (or did, at least) a lot. As far as I can see your only criticism is that videos are easier to make than animations. That's true in general, but a video can still take plenty of time and effort to put together.

May. 13, 2008 | 7:31 PM squeakytoad responds:

Yeah, I still really dislike the Guitar Hero vid when the subject comes up.
But doesn't mean I hold anything against you.
I brought up Hans' video, and he's one of the better among my animator friends; he and I chat a good deal and collaborate on several works.

But no, I have nothing against you as a person or anything. If it sounded that way, my apologies. As I've said several times here, the meaning of my comments is often misconstrued over this emotionless textual format, in which everything sounds harsh and personal.

And, upon looking over my replies again, it does seem like I implied (in one of them) that you're talentless, but this was a slurring of my sentences.
I couldn't honestly say that anyway.
I was addicted to each Escape Series game when it came out.
And you've got some other great work under your profile.

I just always somehow end up sounding like a jerk in at least one sentence no matter what I say, even if I have no intention of it.
I'm working on it.
I'm not interested in still sitting here ranting and getting people pissed off five years from now.
Some guys may be satisfied to make that their life, but I really don't think annoying the crap out of people over the internet is how I want to spend the rest of my days.

So my apologies if it sounded like I had it out for you.

(Also: I'm not complaining about people getting credit for videos (or saying videos are inherently than animations). As long as it's on other sites. However, this is a flash site- one of the few good ones left- and I'd prefer if it stayed that way. Someone should recommend to Tom making a seperate portion of the site- just as there's the flash and audio portal- for videos. Until such a time though, I will continually suggest people put videos on YouTube.)

Oh, yeah I hadn't thought about that, that previously top scores would today be insignificant. That really is a shame.

I guess that also means the treasure hunts will pick up even better overlooked pieces too. Still, its too bad.

May. 13, 2008 | 7:49 PM KagomeHigurashi says:

I wasn't taking it personally---I was just explaining my side of the story.
I WAS trying to appeal to Brawl fans to an extent, but also, most of the stuff in there was just things my friends and I came up with while playing the game. I guess a lot of us still have an immature sense of humor, or something.

May. 13, 2008 | 8:03 PM Afro-Ninja says:

It's fine, I understand where you're coming from. I suppose I would feel that way if video started to become more of a dominant force here. Naturally, featuring videos on the front page is only encouragement for others to submit theirs.. but there still has to be a quality threshold. As long as people aren't simply v-blogging and uploading it, or similar activities, I don't think it's that big of an issue. But we'll see I suppose.

How would you feel about a video based on the escape series? It would be a mix of video and flash, somewhat like *gasp* my newgrounds. The idea being that instead of actually playing an escape game you watch a real video of someone trapped in an escape situation, while that person interacts in a fictional way with the game environment itself. This is an idea I've had for a long time now and plan to do it sometime later this year.

well, i wil rephrase this
well, i cant tell.i agree as well, that ng is on a state of ''problemz'' because of the popular stuff getting front, and original stuff not.(not getting fp)

while i support video games parody movies (heck, i wanted to make one)... i think it should aim on humour, like OUR MARIO, or TSAH 2, or 1, or orange box... or er halomen.. and kirby. yet, sprites are a low attempt on watching it. it doesnt have efforts, talkin about flash!

(now, IF.. sprites movie contains original sprites, and looks like a work with kick ass, humour.. and great style.. with art! well, then, i probably will like it. but i havent seen many of this type until last year)

SUMMARY: we need originallity in ng sumbissions.
