EW: Moving Targets

"Still some of the finest entertainment on NG."

submission: EW: Moving Targets
date: July 3, 2008

Ah, man, you've just got such a skill for humorous story-telling.
You've achieved a series of productions that would actually make for a good television show, unlike most of the shoddy attempts around here that may get some minor popularity online but wouldn't even be considered bearable amongst professional work.

You've got the format down great. And the humor is really original and timeless. I struggle with far too many pop-culture references in my own work, meaning anyone who doesn't keep up with political and entertainment news misses half the subtle remarks in my work (therefore many would deem that humor ineffective). But your comedy is fantastic and can stand on its own. And you make an insane amount of cartoons compared with the rest of us. Bah, your industrious production of these puts most of us to shame.

You also continue to develop your unique art and animation style. You've come a long way there. And though this wasn't your best (several moments didn't seem up to the quality of other recent installments), it still ran smoothly and, while not flawless, was not noticeably poor in any area. It worked and it worked well.

I've never been disappointed by your work, so please keep making more. Keep animating, man.

Ah yes, there were a few more flaws in this one than usual, but thats because this one was more for fun than my last one, so i focused less on getting it perfect. But i'm glad you liked it!

How 2 Succeed on NG pt.2

"Honestly, stop it."

date: July 1, 2008

Ok, first of all, big thumbs up on the originality. You've basically tried really hard to repeat what you've heard all the "cool kids" say, but have massively bungled it. And you made an unnecessary sequel simply because your first attempt was so "successful".
Congrats. You've figured out how to succeed on Newgrounds without real talent.

The art is decent, but there's practically no animation. You get by through the cheaply and hastily motion tweening mouths without any other effort placed into any other aspect of this cartoon.

I find it amusing how you contradicted your first movie. In it, you condemn poor usage of "swear words". You state that other artists use "fuck" and "shit" in excess (and in an odd and childish manner) to get little kids around Newgrounds to think they're cool.
Guess what, kid? That's what you just did. You're probably the worst "swearer" I've ever heard. You sound like a five year old in Sunday School trying to sound "badass". Entirely done for the exact reason you condemned other "artists" for doing so.

Finally, your rant is terrible. You present everything poorly and call out all the wrong issues.
You simplify it to "parodies are bad", because this is what you THINK the cool kids are saying.
The fact of the matter is, there's nothing wrong with parodies. You can't just say slapstick and spoof are "lower" forms of humor.
It's how they're used.
Incorporating popular characters into your "animation" simply because you can't come up with any original humor and lack the ability to entertain on your own merit is lame. Using a parody to compensate for lack of talent is lame.
But a well done parody is fine. And some "slapstick" is fantastic (though these days, most is unbearingly lame).

I basically cringed throughout your entire rant. You really have no idea what the actual problem is. You just repeat what you think people want to hear.
You make this entirely because you know it will be popular. You're just leeching off a certain concept for success just like everyone else.

I loved this. It was a really nice original piece. I enjoyed the use of different styles. And all the art was fantastic. A little of the animation was, at times, poor, but most of it was fantastic.
I just got a great kick out of it. Wasn't hilarious, but it was funny.

It was good. I actually enjoyed watching this, which I can't say for about 80% of the content on this site these days (or on the internet for that matter).

You'll do well, man. You can make appealing and fun commercials. And from the looks of things, you're talented in flash and in basic art and animation.

I look forward to more from you. Keep animating, man.

"That was great, funny, cute, and charming."

date: June 2, 2008

I loved it. I love everything you've put out. You're a great artist, man.

This was also probably the first interaction of video and animation on Newgrounds that I've enjoyed.

I love the photography. Brilliant job.

And the "interviews" were just great. Characters really felt alive.

Great work, man. Keep animating.

Such a fun game. I love it.
The animations were great, and the incorporation of little movies into the game gave it so much more life.
Loved the level art. Everything was done just right there.

The sound effects were awesome. Really fit in well. Good use of them. The music wasn't the best, but I understand what a hassle than can be (from getting music you have rights to, to keeping the file size down, etc).

The gameplay was great. Loved the isometric design. And while the collect/avoid game is quite common in the flash world, I thought you did this one tremendously well.

Props to all you guys. Nice job.

Keep making these!

"Eh, why submit this?"

date: May 31, 2008

If it's just a test, why submit it? That's what places like DeviantArt and SheezyArt are for.
This place is for completed movies, and that's what I'll judge it as.
I try not to let score affect my review (as you sometimes can't control that), but in this case, I can't help but point out that people are going overboard with the fives.

The style is boring. It's typical. It's nothing special.

There really wasn't much animation. Most of the time we were just staring at still images.

You didn't even bother to animate the mouths really. There's no color either.

This is like hanging a sketch you scribbled during lunch in the completed paintings gallery.

I was also not impressed with the sound or story.

But you've got talent. I just wish you'd stop making these scribbles.

Keep animating!

Author's Response:

I"m submitting cuase It's fun and I don't mind having this on NG.
Mainly because I like Newgrounds, you must like Newgrounds too.

It ain't a complete test. If it's a real test, it wouldn't be here.
Story is everything, and these projects have it.

" people are going overboard with the fives."
I just let them do whatever they want. Who's ever doing what, thats how people and life are.
Is it bothering you people are voting fives? Doesn't bother me much, guess people vote 5's whenever they like something.

"The style is boring. It's typical. It's nothing special."
Thanks for your honesty. For more serious projects I will try to give more effort into character designs.

And of course I wouldn't animate the mouths. Don't care to practice on animating mouths as much as coloring, that would slow me down.

"This is like hanging a sketch you scribbled during lunch in the completed paintings gallery."
Then this must be standing out.

"I was also not impressed with the sound or story."
I'll try harder

" I just wish you'd stop making these scribbles."
We live different lives.

Such a wonderful animation. So smooth; so flawless. The characters corresponded perfectly with their environments, rather lovely backgrounds I might add.

The style was fantastic, and the colors all fit together so beautifully.
And your characters, despite not a single line in the short, have fantastically developed personalities. I really like them already and I've only seen two and a half minutes of them.
I'm really looking forward to more.

You should put this down on DVD and run the film festival circuit. This charming animated short would certainly be accepted at many of them.

I'm definitely going to keep an eye on your material in the future.

You made your own background. (I think). Congrats. You actually put out ten seconds of effort on an "animation" for once.

Really tired of hearing how much you hate that other people can afford better stuff.

I've suggested learning to animate properly too many times. You just don't care.
